Digital and Screen Printing Products that DEFY SHOP HUMIDITY.
Humidity. We longed for it during the interminable winter; with every*! %!**%!# shovel of snow. But, our memories of desire for the heat have a way of fading when faced with summer-time humidity that invades our shop environments. So, we offer the following on two stellar products that will stand up during the heat and humidity of summer.
THE FIRST from RhinoTech.
It’s RhinoDARK heat transfer paper. This weedless laser paper involves a two-step process comprised of using an A Sheet (printed with a laser printer) and a B sheet. Because the A Sheet has a polyester coating, it will not expand and contract in humid environments. As a result, you’ll get consistent quality and produce transfers that will pop with brilliant color and intense white on all DARK apparel and fabrics. This paper can be applied to 50/50 blends, 100% Cotton and Polyester fabric such as Dri-Fit.
Use RhinoDARK with OKI Data laser printers from RhinoTech that include: the 920 WT, 711 WT and c831-TS http://rhinotechinc.com/digital-transfer/laser-printers
THE NEXT HUMIDITY-DEFYING PRODUCT from RhinoTech.
In textile screen printing, a Film Positive is required for each color in a design that is going to be screen printed. For example, if you have a 6 color project, you will need 6 Film Positives; one screen frame for each color in the design.
To ensure that your Film Positive material doesn’t expand or contract, we recommend RhinoJet (for inkjet printers) instead of paper transparencies. This product is waterproof clear film with a polyester-coating to make it stable under humid conditions. Its formulation makes sure that it will dry on contact with both Pigment and Dye based inks.
We also encourage you to take a moment to read The Effects of Humidity on Screen Printing by John Levocz. This article recently appeared in the June 24, 2015, issue of Printwear. In it, the author offers screen printers a few reminders on how to prepare for and handle the stickiness of the season.
It’s that time of year again when everything in your shop seems to be wet due to high humidity, and this humidity can cause several problems in your shop that you should be aware of.
First, screens will take a lot longer to dry after degreasing and also after coating with emulsion. Do not rush the coated screens. Make sure they are dry all the way through the emulsion coating. If they are tacky to the touch, they need more drying time. Rushing the screens can cause pinhole and emulsion washout issues.
Second, when using plastisol inks, the moisture in the garments need to be driven out before the curing process can start to take place. Shops with smaller dryers and very little airflow can expect to see their cure time increase, so it is important to re-check your cure before blaming the ink.
