Please – invest in a high quality heat press.

Including and using the highest quality heat press, as possible, along with your Digital Heat Transfer System is a must, especially when you want your  digitally printed products to be worthy. Please, do not sacrifice excellence with a low-cost, lesser value and/or used heat press. If you do, you’re most certainly going to get what you pay for and you won’t be happy. Instead, follow the best business practice that is to purchase the highest quality press as possible. We guarantee that you won’t regret it.

A Heat Press for CAPS/HATS from RhinoTech

IMG_0558Printing on a curve takes a bit of finesse and can be acquired with some patience and testing. It takes a high quality Heat Press with digital time and temperature controls and the operator’s ability to figure out the pressure needed to apply when heat pressing. That’s why we always suggest that you purchase a test pack of paper. During the practice phase, you’ll be less stressed because you are just TESTING. You’ll be figuring out the differences between “low, medium and heavy pressure”, paper peeling techniques and more.  In the step-by-step instructional video above that also includes a how-to on using Textile Metallic Foil, please observe the technique used to produce perfect hats. You’ll discover that it’s important to develop a feel for the “touch and pressure” needed to print on a curve. This will be especially significant when printing on multi-paneled hats with seams.

• How to print on hard surfaces such as metal, glass, acrylic, plastic, wood and ceramic using SinglePrint™ heat transfer paper for laser printers.
• An overview of SingleJet™ heat transfer paper for use with inkjet printers.
• The heat-transfer media, printers/toners and heat-press equipment used.
• Cost considerations of producing decorated apparel digitally versus direct-to-garment and manual textile printing.
• Tips on how to choose between laser and inkjet systems, determining space needs and other considerations for adding digital heat transfer technology to an existing printing business or for a start-up operation.

FYI

Throughout his 35+ year career in our industry, Greg Markus has fully embraced change as the landscape of screen, graphics and digital printing has evolved. In doing so, he explains, “creativity and innovation are enhanced, helping business to thrive and survive”. He encourages all in our industry and those entering it to venture out and investigate possible opportunities to the fullest within the realm of the “new normal” in printing. This involves either merging digital printing technology into traditional printing/embroidery, art studio businesses etc. and/or when starting-up as a stand-alone.

Gregory Markus is the president and owner of RhinoTech, based in St. Paul, MN. Since the company’s inception 19 years ago, Greg, along with his partner, Todd Michaels, V.P./Operations, has charted the growth of RhinoTech into a worldwide manufacturer/distributor of screen, digital and graphics equipment and papers; screen frame GLUE/adhesives, eco-friendly screen cleaning chemicals and equipment, washout booths that help save on water resources, triple-action filtration systems, screen cleaning and recirculating systems, commercial pressure washers, supplies and more.

Survive and Thrive in Screen, Graphics and Digital Printing.

That’s the Way it Was and We Liked It!

Do you remember the Dana Carvey sketch on SNL, “That’s the Way it Was and We Liked It”? Basically, the character’s mantra was “Phooey on progress. I don’t like things now compared to the way they used to be!”  In thinking about the skit’s theme and how tough change can be for some people, in fact, for many in our industry, it’s actually understandable why people don’t relish change and why they want to hang on to the same way of doing business that has served them for decades (even if not very well).

So..because our livelihoods need to flourish, it’s a mandate that we continually look at trends, what the competition is doing, changing technology, needs of customers, the economy, new printing techniques, the decline of large-run printing jobs, innovation and more .

Diversify and be Flexible.

This article, Tracking Trends is Key to Business Survival, is a highly recommended first and/or second read. It was written by Greg Kitson,  founder of Mind’s Eye Graphics, for Impressions Magazine on Nov. 19, 2013. In “Tracking Trends is Key to Business Survival”, Greg thoughtfully shared how he was forced to change during complicated economic times and the impact of the loss of hi-volume orders, how he accomplished the change by looking at a variety of industry trends, what worked and what didn’t.  In order to survive, Greg shared that small- to mid-sized shops may find they need to regroup and discover what customers are willing to pay for, while also finding enough clients who want the same thing. Companies that are content and continue to do what they have been doing for the past 10 years will be in trouble. This statement remains unchanged today.

RhinoTech on Trend.

An example of a company’s ability to thrive is Eagan, MN-based, RhinoTech. With an ever watchful eye on trends and the tempo of the screen printing industry, the 18 year old company orchestrated its entrance  into the digital printing arena many years ago to ensure its place in the industry and to help its textile and graphics printing customers easily diversify, as well.

In doing so, RhinoTech (info@rhinotechinc.com) broadened its products/equipment base. It remains attuned to the nuances of heat press printing, equipment and heat transfer papers. It offers a wide range of heat press equipment, printers, toners and papers. The company extends its knowledge-base through in-person training and step-by-step video instruction. The company also sells Smart Designer X6 Creative Assistant software (that wraps into CorelDRAW X6) so that customers can buy an entire digital printing package complete with art production software. To help customers capture business with the Fluorescent printing on BLACK trend, RhinoTech offers RT SunAngel DARK. Screen and graphics printers AND embroiderers can easily diversify their businesses with this system to help capture all customers, especially those with short run project needs.

BE PROACTIVE.

Greg Kitson says it best, “I identify trends by reading industry trade magazines, attending trade shows and talking with peers. Don’t find out too late. Track trends now and be prepared for whatever the future may bring.” You can contact him at greg@mindseyeg.com. And,  please be sure to mention that you read his great article on this blog.

Digital Printing involved in Fashion, Marketing and Survival!

20131120_114023

The image at left is of a paracord bracelet with a metal dog tag. The dog tag was printed with SinglePrint™ by RhinoTech that is an outrageously cool, heat transfer paper for use with laser printers. It can be used to print on multiple types of light color surfaces, such as wood and glass plaques, ceramic, metal, leather, and acrylic. Aside from dog tags, print guitar picks, plates, glasses, mugs and more. The only other essential ingredient is an imagination!

Make a fashion statement. The tags can be printed in color, in any type of design with a beautifully coordinated paracord (that also is available in variety of colors, including pink/black camo).

Create a marketing opportunity. Print and distribute the dog tags on a ball/chain necklace or on a bracelet at trade shows, concerts and all types of community events with your company’s name, address and logo. Wear it out to dinner as a fashion accessory. You will be remembered and so will your ability to offer digitally printed items with SinglePrint™ that will turn heads!

Survival! With paracord and a dog tag, offer a great looking, potentially lifesaving survival tool if in a household emergency or dangerous wilderness situation that demands a big length of lightweight, ultra-strong rope where even the strands can be separated. Need to patch or pitch a tent, harness yourself to tree in a hurricane, create a set of shoelaces, make a backyard clothes or zip line? Need a fishing line, a line to make a fire bow or a first aide tourniquet? The paracord dog tag bracelet will always be accessible.

We want to credit ApeShirt Apparel Printing for printing the dog tags (he’s a master with SinglePrint™!). And, RhinoTech for an ingenious fashion/marketing/safety statement.
