To demystify is kind of a bold statement, but the need to be enterprising is a needed attribute when tackling the subject of FILM POSITIVES. RhinoTech explains that creating Film Positives is a necessary step in the screen printing process that can be exasperating at times. But…it can be mastered.
WHAT IS A FILM POSITIVE?
A Film Positive is a vellum or polyester sheet with a printed positive image that blocks the light out during exposure.
Once the screen frame has been exposed and then washed off with water, a negative image appears. In other words, when all areas where the light was blocked from the film positive are washed away, the result is a negative image. And, a screen frame for printing has been created. You will see that when you print the ink onto the surface of the shirt, the ink will penetrate through the negative image recreating the design from the film positive onto the shirt.
A Film Positive is required for each color in a design to be screen printed. So…if you have a 6 color project, you will need 6 Film Positives; one screen frame for each color in the design.
WHAT ARE THE EXCELLENT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE RhinoTech FILM POSITIVE MATERIAL?
An ideal material is found with the RhinoJet Film Positive Material by RhinoTech that is a waterproof clear film. It works with both Pigment and Dye based inks. The film enables the operator to secure opaque halftone, shape and image/design clarity.
Additionally significant features of the inkjet film are that the materials has minimal dot gain, dries on contact and has maximum density technology. It is 5 millimeters thick and dries quickly. This particular Film Positive Material can be printed in newer inkjet printers and high volume production printers to generate a film positive or film negatives.
According to Jonathan Monaco of Catspit Productions, “Many RIP software packages sell all black ink conversion kits so that all printer heads will print with debased black ink. This significantly improves the quality of the inkjet film positives produced.”
The following video will also help to demystify the process of making film positives.
